Secret revealed: Why do cats like boxes?

As a cat owner, you have experienced it at least once – in the middle of your vacation backpacking; your cat jumps into the suitcase. Poor friend, you must be thinking, she would like to join me on my trip. Only the actual reasons are not your pet's traveling ambitions.

Let's step back – we all know cats are huge box fans. Cats love boxes, and no matter how many expensive toys you have bought, boxes will remain at the top of their list.

    Boxes are safe!

Are cats playing hide and seek? Sometimes they do. But most of the time, cats need to feel safe and ready so nothing can surprise them.

As ambush predators, cats have always looked for confined places where they can not only hide but also prepare an attack and hunt.

Cats like boxes as they offer a safe zone and reduce stress.

    Adopted cats like boxes

One study examined a group of new shelter cats. Cats were divided into the first group, which received a box, and the second, which didn't. After several days, researchers reported that (1)kittens given boxes adapted to their environment faster and recovered more quickly than the cats without boxes.

Setting up a few boxes might be a good idea if you adopt a new cat or bring your pet to a new place.

    Do cats like plastic boxes?

There is one thing cats, and cat lovers will agree on: cats love boxes, bags, and paper. It doesn't matter if it is a plastic bag from the store or a cardboard box; cats quickly pounce on new items considering them toys or beds, or even snacks.

Why do cats like small boxes?

There is a famous cat slogan - β€œIf It Fits, I Sits”.

We know it looks funny, but cats love squeezing into tiny spaces for comfort and solace. Cats have flexible spines and can pack themselves into small boxes without feeling hurt or uncomfortable.

And there is another reason why cats like small boxes; cats feel safe when the walls of a cardboard box come into contact with their bodies.

    Warm and comfortable place

Cardboard box provides insulation which helps cats retain their body heat. Also, some experts claim that being enclosed reminds cats of being cuddled by their mum.

    Cats need a break

Did you know that a cat needs a break when tired or overstimulated? Cats find a box a perfect place to recharge until they are ready to play again.

    Curiosity

Cats are curious, so the appearance of an unfamiliar object will undoubtedly pique your pet's interest. The box is a special kind of object that keeps them coming back.

    Are boxes safe for cats?

Boxes will not harm your feline friend but make sure it is free of tape and staples that could hurt your cat.
